Description

Back in the 1800's, smelting plants lined the Lake Michigan coastline, especially near Leland and Frankfort. The byproducts of the smelting process, as was the fashion in those days, was dumped into the lake. All these years later, the slag glass formed by the hot molten byproducts hitting the cold (it's always pretty cold in Lake Michigan!) waters of the lake, washes ashore. It's some of the most prized beach finds around! These “stones” are all unique, often with a blue or a green tinge. Sometimes big holes occur, and always there are slight color variations, showing sand, stone, slag, all kinds of wonderful things.

I've turned a beautiful piece of this Leland Blue into this one-of-a-kind necklace. The stone itself is almost 3/4″ wide, and 1 1/4″ long. I've circled the top of the stone with sterling silver, given a lovely patina and then buffed back to shiny. You can still see the patina in the low points – it gives the focal a nice, warm, vintage feel. I've wrapped it so it can dangle in either direction – there is no front to this piece. One side is more blue, the other side, more greys and browns. It's stunning, and unique.

The necklace itself is a silky smooth sterling silver snake chain with a lobster claw clasp. The necklace has simple elegance that means that everyone focuses on that stone.

Start a conversation. Wear the necklace. When you tell the story, people will be so excited you're such a student of history!

All of my necklaces come lovingly nestled in a hand made cloth pouch, perfect for gifting or for carrying your treasures with you when you travel. Enjoy!
